Here's
how the Pinehurst match works: Player A and Player B are partners. Player A tees off and
Player B tees off. Player A then plays Player B's ball for his second shot.
Player B hits Player A's ball for his second shot. They then quickly pick the
BEST ball and continue play with one ball only, alternating shots until
finishing the hole. The pattern for the CHOSEN ball in this example would be
Player A tees off - Player B hits player A's ball - they choose this ball -
Player A hits the third shot - Player B the fourth shot etc.
An example
explaining the formula: Player A has an 8 handicap and their partner Player B
is 24. Their team handicap is 60% (of the lower handicap) x 8 = 4.8 plus 40%
(of the higher handicap) x 24 = 9.6. Add 4.8 to 9.6 = rounded to 14. They are
playing against Player C with a 17 handicap x 60% = 10.2 and Player D 30 x 40%
= 12 for a team total of 22. The lower team plays at scratch and gives away 8
strokes to players C and D.
